Vidyanikethan, with support from TdH-NL, jointly implemented the IMAGE- Karnataka project along with four other NGOs. As the lead NGO or the nodal NGO, Vidyanikethan worked with more than 600 early married girls (EMGs) or under age married girls in more than 20 villages. While IMAGE- Karnataka organized direct and indirect interventions with EMGs (Early Married Girls) from (   ) to (   ), from (   ), Comic Relief Fund funded the IMAGE- Next project, which focuses on a movement created, owned and managed by EMGs, and survivors, with the support of different stakeholders. The objective of the movement was to empower girls and young women, who are victims and survivors of early child marriage to improve their access to rights, opportunities and services in Karnataka, India.

IMAGE-Next was implemented by a total of 5 NGOs, of which Vidyanikethan is the nodal or the lead partner. Apart from Vidyanikethan, the other NGOs implementing the project are (    ) names of NGOs and the areas they are working in.

Each NGO worked with 3000 EMG over a period of 5 years and with 600 EMG per year.

Summary of interventions

  • Identifying EMG movement leaders, counselling them and their families to mainstream the EMGs and survivors (early married girls who are now in their twenties) in educational or income friendly skills training programme.
  • Facilitating their access to health care and sensitizing them on key issues such as nutrition, hygiene, pregnancy motherhood
  • Sensitizing them and key stakeholders on rights and issues that are integral to their welfare and development.
  • Founding a base for sustainability and a supporting network of primary and secondary stakeholders through formation of groups (Child Rights Groups, EMG Groups, family groups) in order to reduce and prevent early underage marriage.

Overview of impact till date

  • Peer EMGs and unmarried adolescent girls are coming out from their homes to attend the sensitization which is the first step towards a positive change.
  • Children and peer EMGs are coming forward to share information about fixing of marriage of girls who are underage
  • Families have been successfully counselled to defer the marriage their daughters till the girl attains the legal age of marriage
  • Gradual change in attitudes of families (maternal and in-laws) as EMGs are now coming out of their homes to attend meetings, completing their education and enrolling in learning opportunities such as nursing.
  • Unmarried adolescent girls and boys have gradually realised the need for marriage at the legal age for girls, and the importance of continued education, health care and other key aspects.
